Automation to Boost Cargo Clearance, Revenue at Nigerian Ports

The Nigerian Association of Master Mariners has endorsed the Federal Government’s Trade Modernisation Project, predicting it will significantly enhance cargo clearance efficiency at the Nigerian port.

Captain Tajudeen Alao, President of NAMM, praised the project for its potential to boost internally generated revenue and elevate Nigeria’s global standing. He emphasized the importance of embracing technology, citing Singapore’s transformation into a first-world nation through technological advancements.

The Trade Modernisation Project, a 20-year concession agreement between the Federal Government and Trade Modernisation Project Ltd, aims to implement paperless customs clearing operations in the Nigeria Customs Service.

The project’s automation will streamline customs clearance procedures, reducing time and increasing revenue. Ahmed Ogunshola, General Manager of the Trade Facilitation Project, highlighted the benefits of automation, including simplified stakeholder experiences, increased government revenue, and enhanced international trade facilitation.

The project is expected to generate over $250 billion in revenue for the Federal Government over its lifespan, aligning Nigeria with global standards in trade facilitation.
