Customs Tincan Island Port Command Clarifies Allegations of Extortion by US Returnee

The Nigeria Customs Service, Tincan Island Port Command, has issued a press statement to address allegations of extortion made by a 70-year-old United States returnee, Olukayode David-Albert. The statement, signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SC Ngozi Okwara, provides clarity on the customs clearance process and the applicable regulations.

At the center of the controversy is David-Albert’s claim that Customs officials demanded a staggering N76 million to clear his two vehicles and personal belongings. However, the Command’s statement reveals that the duty value for the two vehicles was determined to be N34,969,374.00, significantly less than the N53.5 million allegedly demanded as a “compromise” amount.

The Command explained that Nigerian citizens who have resided outside Nigeria for at least nine months are eligible to import their personal belongings duty-free, in accordance with the ECOWAS Common External Tariff (CET) 2022-2026, Schedule 2 No. 8 (3). However, this exemption does not extend to vehicles, which are subject to applicable duties and taxes.

In the case of David-Albert’s luxurious 2024 Hyundai SUV, the Command applied an Import Duty rate of 20%, a levy of 20%, and a Value Added Tax (VAT) of 7.5%, in compliance with Nigeria’s Customs regulations.

The Command categorically denied that any officer requested N76 million from David-Albert, encouraging him to provide evidence of such misconduct and identify the officer involved. The statement emphasized the Command’s commitment to transparency, professionalism, and fairness in its operations, while enforcing the law without fear or favor and supporting legitimate trade.

In conclusion, the Nigeria Customs Service, Tincan Island Port Command, remains dedicated to upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism in its operations. The Command’s clarification of the allegations made by David-Albert serves as a reminder of the importance of complying with established customs regulations and the need for transparency and accountability in all dealings with Customs officials.
