Guidelines for importing and customs clearing of Inverter Batteries into Nigeria under SONCAP

Selecting the Right Inverter Battery for Optimal Performance and Importing and sorting customs clearance into Nigeria under SONCAP

Inverter batteries play a crucial role in maximizing the performance of inverters, which convert DC power to AC for use with various appliances. With different capacities and types (lead-calcium and lithium-ion), choosing the correct battery is vital to ensure the longevity and efficiency of both the inverter and battery. Lithium-ion batteries excel in performance, longevity, and maintenance, while lead-acid batteries are suitable for specific uses.

Importing Inverter Batteries into Nigeria

Inverter batteries are considered high-risk items and are regulated by the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON). To import them, you’ll need:

Preliminary registrations –

Register for TIN.

Register and obtain SONCAP certificates, especially for brand new items.

Obtain PAAR( Pre arrival assessment report) and Form M for brand new items.

Product Certificates

Packing list

Certificates of Origin and Invoice

– Quality Management document (ISO 17025 Test Report)
– Export declaration form
– Product Certificate (PC):
– Unregistered (PCU): valid for 6 months
– Licensed (PCL): valid for 1 year, issued to manufacturers with factories in multiple countries

SONCAP Program

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria Conformity Assessment Program (SONCAP) ensures imported goods meet Nigerian standards. Cotecna, appointed by SON since 2013, verifies conformity and issues Product Certificates (PC) and SONCAP Certificates (SC). After importation, SON registers products and endorses their logo upon completion of the product registration process.

Remember, using the correct inverter battery and following the SONCAP program ensures safe and efficient use of inverters in Nigeria.”
